5 New Year's Resolutions for Police Families

It's that time a year again when we begin setting goals for ourselves in the form of a New Year's resolution.  Some of the more popular ones are things like:

- Stop smoking
- Lose weight
- Eat healthier
- Get a better job
- Take a trip
- Manage debt
- Reduce stress, etc.

Yet, how many of these things do we really keep? According to Statistic Brain, out of the 45% of folks who make resolutions, only 8% succeed in keeping and meeting them.

With those figures in mind (as sad and pointless as they are), I thought I'd give you 5 New Year's resolutions for police families, that are not only attainable, but can become a vital part of your daily/weekly routine.

1. Always Say "I Love You".  These 3 little words have such an impact.  Everyone wants to be loved, and each of us like to hear it.  For law enforcement families especially...you never know what the next hour or day can bring.  Don't take each other for granted, but always remember to remind the ones you love how important they really are.

2. Don't Forget to Laugh.  It's been said that laughter is the best medicine.  Life can be so burdensome and heavy, so look for ways to bring laughter into the home.  Believe me, a good belly laugh can help us overlook another's faults, and relieve stress that might otherwise consume us.  Just laugh!

3.  Plan and Protect Date Nights.  You can plan these things, but often we let other "more important" opportunities slide into their place before realizing it.  Moms and dads...you need regular date nights.  Without them, your marriage will become dull and vulnerable to outside attacks.  Schedule your date nights on a calendar, then stick to them NO MATTER WHAT! You owe it to your children to instill the importance of your marriage and keeping its walls wholly intact.  Your date doesn't have to cost money...go for a walk, take a drive, find a hill to climb together, but the key is TOGETHER. :)

4. Never Give Up the Surprises.  I don't care what your spouse says, he or she will appreciate kind gestures and fun surprises.  This is an area that I need a little work in, but don't we all?  Find ways to surprise your mate.  Take homemade cookies to the station or leave a love note in his pocket.  Send her a flower at work or leave a note on her car.  Little things can mean so much, and help keep the excitement in your marriage.  Why not give it a try!

5.  Don't Forget the Armor.  Each of us need to armor up every day.  God gave us a list of items to "put on" in order to deflect the weapons of the enemy.  So, drag out that armor.  Polish it up.  Put it on.  You never know, it just may save your life and your marriage.

Ephesians 6:10-18

...Belt of truth
....Breastplate of righteousness
.....Feet of readiness from gospel of peace
......Shield of faith
........Helmet of salvation
..........Sword of the Spirit

Well, that's my list.  Your list may look a little different, but these are things that anybody can do with a little love and effort.  Here's to you friend!

God bless and Happy New Year!
Kristi

  1. I share your list. I've been doing them regularly. Although I might add that our senses of humor are vastly different, which explains the blank stares I get from my wife when I'm laughing myself silly at something.

  2. Haha. Yes, sometimes I think Rick thinks I've lost my marbles, but I tell him that I keep him entertained. :)
