Proverbs 31 - Police Wife Style

I have to chuckle by that title.  I've been a police wife for 25 years, and I've tried to live somewhat close to what the Bible describes as the Proverbs 31 woman, but as they say, "It ain't been easy."

Putting those two things together - police life and Mrs. Proverbs 31 Superwoman, sometimes you're left feeling like a police cruiser has just run over your face.  Ouch!

So, is it possible?  Can the wife of an officer become a Proverbs 31 woman?  Class?  "Yes, she can!"

Turning in our Bibles to Proverbs 31, and starting with verse 10, we catch our first glimpse of this amazing lady.  It reads...

A wife of noble character who can find?

What does that mean?  Well...the original meaning of noble is virtuous or army strength!  Any police wife knows that in order to tackle everything that comes her way while the hubby is working, takes army strength to do it!

The passage goes on to say...She is worth far more than rubies.  Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.

What was it that drew your husband to you?  Was it your ravaging good looks?  Was it your high intelligence?  If he's smart, he'll say a resounding, "YES!"  But, in all actuality, it was much more.  Your husband picked you because he loved you and knew that you were capable of handling things while he was away.  You, my friend, are a precious treasure that he appreciates, whether he verbalizes it or not.

She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.

Do you have your husband's back?  You are his partner, right?  Then do you have his back?  How are your words about him to others?  Do you try and deflect things that might bother him when he's stressed?  A Proverbs 31 woman is going to build her husband up, and have his back in all matters.  She will support and love him at all times and protect him when necessary.  She is a mighty, domestic warrior for her man! :)

She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands.  She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar.

This woman is not lazy.  She is always busy providing for the needs of her family.  And...I believe this is a great passage that gives a license for carryout (brings her food from afar).  Smile.

She gets up while it is still dark; she provides food for her family and portions for her servant girls.

At first look, it seems this woman gets up and fixes the ole pancakes and toast.  But if you look in the Amplified Bible it reads...She provides (spiritual) food for her family.  The word "spiritual" is key.  A wife and mom who can get up before anyone else in the house and bring herself and her family before the throne of God, will find that she is amply supplied to meet the demands of the day, and that her family will reap the benefits of a prayer warrior.

She considers a field and buys it...she plants a vineyard...she sees that her trading is profitable.

This Wonder Woman is business savvy.  She knows how to start a business and oversee its earnings.  This girl has it going on!

She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.

The Proverbs 31 woman/police wife is compassionate.  She sees the needs of her fellow sisters and reaches out through words of encouragement and a hot meal when needed. :)

When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet.  She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple.

This woman knows how to clothe her family and dress up her home on a cop's budget.  She, herself, is dressed appropriately and with pizazz.  Pinterest is the name of the game and she can whip up a beautiful scarf out of an old t-shirt any day.

Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.

You know what they say..."Behind every successful man, is a good woman."

She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.

This girl does not wring her hands with worry.  She find her strength and peace of mind in the Lord, and can rest assured she (and her husband) is safely in His hands.

She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.  She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.

This police wife is wise.  She can decipher between negative hype and reality of a situation.  Her words are wise and full of kindness.  She is busy always and can fix a leaky faucet, change a flat tire or quiet a squeaky door, all with the best of them.

Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: "Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all."

Her husband and children see all the responsibilities she has and how she handles them so efficiently, and they respect and praise her.

Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.

A Proverbs 31 woman understands that her beauty comes more from within - from her relationship with her Heavenly Father, than from without.  She is recognized as a true beauty.

Well, ladies, that's my take on this super lady of the Bible, and of course, with an LE flair.  I hope its given you some things to think about and a little army strength for your tasks. So, what are we waiting for?  Let's 31 it, police wife style!!   :)

Blessings,
Kristi

  1. Hi Kristi. I think there's more to the Proverbs 31 woman than people initially realize when just reading the passage. I've incidentally been reading a new book by Dr. Tony Evans and his daughter, Chrystal Evans Hurst, called "Kingdom Woman" that has really given me new insights. Right off the bat they talk about the Proverbs 31 woman being the hallmark of kingdom women, "But the Proverbs 31 woman is not the model of a perfect woman. Neither is a kingdom woman called to perfection. Women, you can be a Proverbs 31 woman and more - but that doesn't mean you do it all at the same time." They tlk about life flowing through seasons and about getting help, not trying to do it all. It's really eye-opening. If you're interested in Dr. Evans' book, they have information and free devotional downloads at kingdomwomanbook.com. I hope it blesses you as it has blessed me.

  2. Thanks for your response. I totally agree. The Proverbs 31 woman was put there as an example, not to measure ourselves against it and feel defeated by her standards. Not everything will fit everyone at all times. But, with God's help, we can be the godly woman that He calls each of us to be. :)
